The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, in partnership with the Mt. Adams Institute and AmeriCorps, is now offering a full-time, paid internship for U.S. Military Veterans ages 21-35. Position Title: Forestry Intern Position Summary: This trainee position will provide support to the Silviculture and Timber Management Program on the Wallow Mountain Office. The position is primarily field work and you will be in the woods working with one or more members of our silviculture and timber staff. The goals of this position are (1) gain an understanding of basic silviculture and timber management practices (25%); (2) support staff in pre-sale, sale administration and similar duties in the timber management program (75%). Assignments are designed to provide training in the principles, concepts, work process, and regulations of silviculture and timber management practices. Applicants with previous experience in the Military Occupation Specialties (MOS) in the Corps of Engineering Field or educational background in biological sciences, physical sciences, or forestry would be well qualified for this opportunity. General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to): 1. Silvicultural support including: stand exams or stand exam service contract inspection, timber stand improvement service contract inspection (i.e. pre-commercial thinning), tree planting inspection, cone surveys and collection, and stocking surveys. 2. The timber sale layout program: flagging, tagging, traversing unit boundaries, tree marking, and timber cruising. 3. Timber sale administration support. Position Requirements: 1. Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record and ability to provide documentation. Must comply with Driver Certification and Safety Agreement (see VetsWork Application Documents on website). 2. Attend a mandatory orientation in Corbett, OR from 2/8 to 2/12, quarterly Intern trainings in Trout Lake, WA (food and lodging provided for orientation and trainings), and monthly Intern meetings. Intern is responsible for transportation to and from all mandatory trainings and meetings. 3. Ability to perform arduous field work in forest conditions, individually or part of a team. 4. Good oral and written communication skills. 5. Regular and reliable attendance. 6. Ability to drive four wheel drive vehicles. 7. Communicate and interact in a positive, professional manner with internal employees, partners, the general public, and stakeholders. 8. Demonstrate independence, motivation and resourcefulness. 9. Comply with all established agency safety policies and procedures. 10. Must possess lug sole boots and all weather gear. 11. Ability to navigate uneven/difficult terrain during periods of inclement weather. 12. Able to carry 25 lbs pack for up to 8 hours. 13. This position does not have recurring access to vulnerable populations. 14. Must have served in US Armed Forces and have a DD214 with an honorable discharge. 15. 21 to 35 years of age at beginning of service term. 16. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
